Weekly report 21/9/19

Emma the only Denbigh Harrier who raced the Trailffest half marathon on Saturday. It was very scenic and extremely hot making it a tough race requiring perseverance.  The Ffestiniog steam train transported runners and spectators in style to the start of the race at Tanygisiau giving plenty of time to enjoy the views and spot sections of the race route. Emma Collins finished 5th lady, 1st V50 in a field of 140 in a time of 2:08:26.

There were five Denbigh Harriers competing in the Llyn Alwen Trail & Canicross  race over 11.5K.  The race whilst starting in dry weather turned out to be a wet race for all concerned. Fred Jones led the Harriers home despite being the oldest Harrier competing with Carys Davies not far behind and relishing the hills. Ruth Crowther, Dawn Marshall and John Llewelyn Thomas had great runs on this challenging course with Ruth and John both having run a Parkrun the day before. Three Harriers, Roger Snaith, Katy Baugh and Stacey Hughes also supported the race by marshalling and sweeping.

Weekly Report 14/9/19

Sunday saw the inaugural North Wales Road Relays championships take place on Llandudno Prom. There were 63 teams representing 11 clubs taking part in the event with each team made up of three runners. Denbigh had 7 teams entered in different age categories with each runner running 4k. There were wonderful performances resulting in four medals for for the club. Having more than one Harrier team in the masters category race was an advantage as runners could work together to improve their times.  The Female 50-59 category team of Emma Collins, Tracey Williams and Menai Baugh were comfortable gold medal winners. The Male 50-59 category team of David Baugh, Owen Conry and Mat Jones had a much tighter race eventually overtaking Abergele and Wrexham to win by 12 seconds. The Female 40-49 team of Mel Morris, Victoria Whitehead and Cary Davies were delighted to pick up a silver medal after a tight race. In the Senior and F35 category the young Harriers: Alaw Medi, Katy Baugh and Mari Williams  brought home a bronze medal beating the much fancies Prestatyn team by a fine margin. This was a great team performance for the club that required some considerable organisation and training to make it a success. Special mention should go to Chris Baldwin for his organisational efforts and to Elen Baugh for her support on the day.

Weekly report10/8/19

The August Denbigh Harriers Handicap race was well contested with the first 10 runners finishing with a minute. The course was slightly longer than previous races due to a course diversion so times were slower for everyone. John Llewelyn Thomas was the winner this month after putting on a sprint finish holding off the fast finishing Arwel Jones and Mel Morris. The fastest times on the night went to Tony Wood for the men and Mel Morris for the women. With only two races to go in the series there six or seven Harriers in with a chance of winning the series. Tony Wood and Victoria Whitehead are in strong positions with Ruari Benton Tony Benton, Luke Hughes, Bob Neale, and Arwel Jones in contention.

2nd Arwel Jones 25:13
3rd Melina Morris 22:48
Wednesday saw four Denbigh Harriers enjoy a beautiful sunny evening for the Caernarfon 10k.  There was a light southwesterly breeze behind the runners for the final 4K with fantastic views of Snowdonia mountains and the Llyn  Peninsular. There were two well deserved age category prizes for Duncan Jones in the M60 and Menai Baugh in the F60. This year the race was run clockwise with the hills at the beginning which many thought would be easier however everyone found the final flat 4K on the Menai straights hard work. A special mention should go to new member Carys Davies who ran the race in 51.29 having done the North Wales 1/2 marathon only three days before.
35th David Baugh 42.41, 76th Duncan Jones 48.09 1st M60, 108th Carys Davies 51.29, 128th Menai Baugh 54.21 1st F60

The penultimate one of the series – and weather-wise often the most favourable before autumn storms break and the ground gets muddy. A good one for the ‘improvers’ group to try if you have ideas about doing the Winter League Cross Country (which would be good!).

August Results

Warm-ish but windy with intermittent rain. The grass is longer in the fields which does restrict progress a little, but the playing fields were cut recently so on balance the conditions were good. Interesting that most people were a little slower than last month and I think this may indicate that there have been a lot of particularly long and hard races recently which are beginning to sap the energy levels. This is a point to note as the Cross Country season approaches. Not that I am ‘anti’ half marathons or Fell ultras, but go into October tired and you won’t have time to recover before two of the League races are gone and the team is 100 points adrift of where we need to be. This handicap race worked well in terms of showing how difficult a close finish can be with 17 of the 21 within a minute. In the Women’s League races a minute represents about 40 places – blink, feel tired, or lack confidence, and you lose half a dozen. The men have longer to regret not taking a couple of weeks off!

Rob has done a sterling job tabulating the results and the points competition is wide open, though Tony W has taken a significant lead having been able to drop his worst position (which was 25th) in favour of this 12th. Victoria drops an 18th for this 14th and both now have two more races – and both potentially have a worst 14th to discard. Ruari, Tony B, Luke, Bob, and Arwel also now in a position to get rid of the big numbers.

Weekly Report 3rd Aug 2019

The midweek Ponderosa Fell Race was held in murky conditions but very well attended with runners wanting to test themselves on the 4 mile and 800foot race over the moors.  The race has a half a mile climb to the finish making it important to leave something in reserve for the end of the race. There were five Denbigh Harriers racing with Tony Wood continuing his improving form in 8th place with Mari Williams leading the Denbigh women home closely followed by Katy Baugh. Menai Baugh was a close second in her category despite taking 5 minutes off her pervious time for this race.

8th Tony Wood 29.43

53rd Mari Wiliams 37.03

55th Katy Baugh 37.25

64th Menai Baugh 39.39

Five Denbigh turned out for the tough North Wales Half Marathon. This race starts and finishes on the beach near Conwy marina, with a mile stretch over heavy sand, ridges filled with sea water making for slow going. A nice flat stretch to Penmaenmawr, then a long climb up Sychnant Pass, turning onto an off road section with even more climb before a fast descent down a rough path down to Conwy before returning on 2 miles of flat until the final mile on the sand. There was strong running by all in humid conditions. Emma Collins finished in 1:47:03 1st in age category, Carys Davies in her first race for the club finished in 2:06:15, Hayley Lloyd-Roberts ran well for 2:14:36, Ian Jones completing his 12 half marathon in 12 months finished in 2:19:47 and Rob Parry hadn’t run for 3 weeks, having pulled out of he snowdonia trail half with an injury finished in 2:36:33.

There were Harriers running Parkruns in venues far and wide.

Weekly Report 27/7/19

The Green Green Grass of Home midweek fell race was held in Llangynhafal this week. The race was organised by Denbigh Harrier Tony Benton and used the Golden Lion as it’s race HQ.  The hot temperatures during the day had fallen only slightly in time for the evening start of this race. This didn’t seem to daunt anybody and a record 99 runners turned out for this trek up and down the Clwydian hills along some rarely trodden tracks and paths before descending steeply across open heath to the finish. Despite getting lost Dan Jones was the first Harrier home in 23rd place in 54.56. Next home was Kay Baugh in 47th  (5th woman) in 58.14 followed by Peter Lester-Owen in 70th 62.24 and Fred Jones 71st  62.39, Menai Baugh 76th 64.20 and  Ruari Benton 81st 65.11.
The Clwydian 10 mile race was held on Sunday with the Clydian 20 was cancelled due to the poor visibility and conditions. Just 2 Denbigh Harriers braved the wet conditions. The race started at Plas Dolben farm and summited Moel Famau twice after going up the infamous ‘gulley’ ! There was 3200ft climb and 10.3 miles in tough conditions. Victoria Whitehead finished in 7th place and was 1st lady in 2hrs 2mins and Luke Hughes finished in 18th and in 2.15 only a week after he raced the Snowdon International.
The Helena Tipping 10k in Wrexham had help in very damp conditions with puddles on the course. However for the race itself conditions improved resulting in some great times. As this was the North Wales 10k Championship race the field was competitive so it was great news that threee of the four Denbigh Harriers running came away with prizes. The prize winners were Emma Collins for the F55 category where she was over five minutes ahead of the next runner. Mel Morris second F45 in a closely fought race and Fred Jones was second in the M60 category.

Weekly Report 20/7/19

Saturday saw the 44th International Snowdon Race 2019 held in Llanberis and 5 Denbigh Harriers were there to take on the iconic race up and down Snowdon which is considered as one of the greatest in the world of mountain running, and attracts some of the best racers in Europe. Covering 9.5 miles and climbing over 3000ft the decent often causes fall and injuries and requires concentration the whole way. All the Harriers got up and down the course without falling and there was a personal best for Elen Baugh by 2 minutes. Newcomers to the  race, Luke Hughes, Huw and Mari Williams,  all bettered their practice times on the race by a large margin. David Baugh ran his race 4 minutes faster than last year.

On Sunday two Harriers ran the Windmill Half Marathon in Lytham St. Annes. Race day gave them pleasant warm weather with head wind.  Hywel Roberts and Ian Jones decided to run the race together and just enjoy it. It was a two lap course along the sea front and flat. Hywel Roberts finished in 1.59.27 and Ian Jones  in 1.59.37.  Ian was happy with this time as this was his 11th Half Marathon in 11 months.
