4th Virtual Handicap

Round 4 (best performance up until dusk on 12th April) is on the new course from the other side of the gate at the end of the path into the uphill field opposite the Police station. Finish there too. See description of course on Fred’s post on facebook – with Strava map.

According to  my watch it is 3.09 miles or 5K for all practical purposes. In terms of Parkrun difficulty, think Wepre rather than Bodelwyddan.

2nd Virtual Handicap – up to Dusk on 29th March

Lovely dry conditions this week. Only two minimal patches of mud. The gate after the start (and before the finish) is open as well, which is worth 10 seconds or so in total. The previous churned up mud is now hard-edged and a potential hazard (I tripped once) but altogether quite pleasant.

Moel y Parc – Pen y Cloddiau Virtual Fell Race 20-22 March ‘20

Some excellent results on this course over the weekend. Times were taken from elapsed times on the course i.e. from the time the watch was started until it was stopped, trying to replicate a real race. So if like some people you stopped your watch for any reason this paused time was included in the final time. Well done everyone who gave it go despite the issues we had with route finding, watches and phones.

You can try more than once between those dates and the best time counts. The start list has minimal changes due to the rapidly improving ground conditions complicating the expected performances.

Virtual Fell Race #1 March 2020

Due to the restrictions in place cancelling races and group training this fell run has been set up for those individuals who want to solo run a pre-defined 10k/6.2m (385m/1,250′) course at a time of their own choosing over the weekend 21/22 March between sunrise on Saturday until sunset on Sunday.  This is not an organised run and it is simply a suggestion to keep runners sane during the current epidemic so you do this at your own risk. For your own safety please make sure you carry a waterproof top or if it is dry please carry windproof and a mobile phone. This is a common sense measure as you will be running on your own and if injured you need to keep warm and possibly call for help. Also given the circumstances avoid other members of the public and wash your hands after finishing the run.

The route will begin from the Llangwyfan Forest car park between Pen y Cloddiau and Moel Arthur. The start point is the second gate from the right. Remember to start your watch/phone.

Startsmall

The route heads downhill for 1.5k along the track until you go through a gate and joins another track coming from the left. Bear right onto the new track and follow this uphill for 3k until you reach the saddle between Moel y Parc and Pen y Cloddiau.

IMG_7401Saddle between Moel y Parc and Pen y Cloddiau

Saddle between Moel y Parc and Pen y Cloddiau

Take the path upwards with  the fence on your right for 1k to the cairn on the summit of Moel y Parc which is checkpoint 1 (not the trig point) . If you are not recording the run on an online platform (Strava/Runkeeper/Garmin) take a picture of the cairn with you in it somehow.

IMG_7423

Return to the saddle by the same route and then climb Pen y Cloddiau to the summit and follow the path back down to the car park.

IMG_7428You can download a GPX file Of the route  here

The finish is the gate where the track ends. Stop your watch/phone.

IMG_7424

When you have finished save your run if you use an online platform like Strava/Runkeeper/Garmin or if not take a picture of your watch face. Please also take a selfie (i.e a picture of yourself only)  that we will put into a collage for the newspaper.

When you are online go to the DH FB group and please post in a comment your run as a link from your online account  it should look something  like this: https://strava.app.link/JBeVJJvXV4 The reason we need the link is that we need your elapsed time and not the moving time online systems produce. Please also upload, if necessary,  your watch picture, checkpoint picture and selfie.

Denbigh Harriers Weekly Report 14/3/20

This weekend saw two British Championship races in North Wales with runners from all over the UK the UK coming to test themselves against the elements and best runners in the country. Both races were organised to limit indoor gathering and encouraged social distancing in line with health guidance.

Three Harriers ran in the British Masters Cross Country Championships on Saturday, a national event which was held locally on the Rhug Estate Corwen. The weather was dry and warm albeit windy on the return leg with conditions under-foot muddy but not as wet as expected given the recent storms and rain. The ever improving Melina Morris ran an exceptional race, finishing 26th overall, 20th Female and 4th Female over 45 in a time of 27 mins 22 secs. Fred Jones, running in the same race finished in an admirable  48th position in a time of  29 mins 48 secs. and was very pleased with his overall 6th position in his M65 age category. Menai Baugh was 77th and 7th F 60 finishing in a time of  33mins 42 secs  Many thanks to Prestatyn Running Club for expertly organising this high profile, national race.

British Masters Cross Country

Not far away, at the same time,  in Llanuwchlyn, near Bala, two Denbigh Harriers were part of a very large field for the first of the British Fell Running Championship races with runners coming from all corners of the UK for this unique gathering. The race was a 10.6 mile race climbing 3,100’ to the summit of Aran Fawddwy in wet conditions with the runners encountering snow patches and ice on the rocky path to the summit. With all the recent rain and melting snow the course was treacherous resulting in multiple slips and falls for both runners, luckily no serious damage was done to either runner. Vic Belshaw was the first Harrier home in 2hrs 8m and David Baugh finished in 2hrs 13m. Of the 36 entries in their M60 age group 29 finished the race with Vic finishing 8th and David finishing 11th.

Three Denbigh Harriers made the early start journey over the border race in the Shrewsbury 10K. This was not  the easiest of 10k races but well supported by runners and spectators alike even under the current health restrictions.

Denbigh Harriers Weekly Report 7/3/20

12 Denbigh Harriers made the trip to sunny but blustery Llandudno on Saturday for the rearranged Nick Beer 10k. The rearranged race had to use an alternative route due to a landslide on the Great Orme. This route consisted of two of laps of the Llandudno prom either side of a hilly detour. The wind had an effect on the race especially on the last mile on the prom towards the finish as well as blowing sand into the runners eyes towards the West shore. There were some great personal bests for Huw Williams, Rebekah Dumayne and Jessica Jones with a 3rd M65 category prize for Fred Jones.

Today’s results and report from Nick Beer:
Huw Williams – 24th – 40:28 – PB
Melina Morris – 70th – 44:35 – 4th in cat
Mathew Jones – 87th – 45:31
Duncan Jones – 103rd – 46:26
Mari Williams – 115th – 47:05
Fred Jones – 117th – 47:15 – 3rd in cat
Carys Davies – 142nd – 48:53 – 4th in cat
Ian Jones – 246th – 55:27
Michael James – 249th – 55:34
Rebekah Dumayne – 331st – 1:01:41 – PB
Julie Robers – 351st – 1:03:20
Jessica Jones – 387th – 1:08:47- PB

The Carding Mill Canter was a new one for the 3 three harriers On Sunday. This was a Welsh Championships race but as it was held in England many of the runners came from English clubs. This was graded as an AS race which means lots of climbing over a short distance – 5.1 miles and 1900’. There were four hills and a couple of them very steep which required using hands in places. The runners were very lucky with the weather as it was raining before the race and poured down after the finish. It was a great course with treacherous descents and those of course those hills. David Baugh managed to keep his daughter, Katy Baugh, behind he is not sure how long that is going to last for. Katy finished as the 1st Senior Lady and Menai Baugh picked up the 2nd W60.

63rd David Baugh1:00:23
69th Katy Baugh1:01:29
112th Menai MBaugh 1:12:15

Three Denbigh Harriers travelled to Wrexham to take part in the RunWales 10 and 20 mile races in Wrexham. Although not as wet as previous years the weather still didn’t know what to do with itself. The runners were hit by rain; a good few gusts to dry off and then the reward of some sunshine. The course had enough inclines and country road detours to keep it interesting and the Harriers were rewarded with some good times. Cary Davies has an excellent run in the 10 miler just a day after running the Nick Beer 10k, showing just how much her strength and speed are growing – 7th F, 2nd F40 ( 1:20:59) Mel Morris and Lisa Pope both preparing for marathons, were in the 20 mile race. Mel, who had also ran the Nick Beer 10k, was first Harrier home in a 20 mile PB of 2:41:40. Lisa was on her third tough race in as many weekends showed how ready she is for London in a fantastic time of 2:54:40

20 mile

Also on Sunday was the ALDI Chester 10K.

April 2020 Start List

Start as last month in the field opposite the cemetery. Out of that and diagonally across to next two kissing gates and up to the stone steps. Then two laps from the stone steps and back to the start. Approximately 3.5 miles – on a trial basis. Should be much more interesting for spectators/officials but quite tough for runners! On a drier course I expect the less fit to do relatively better.

P.S. April 5th. This is Start List ending 12th April.

March Results

Amazingly bright sunshine after so many stormy weeks! I thought there might be a big turnout but it seems that my comments about the extreme mud may have put many off. It is possible that people might want a change of course? The woods above the quarry again have been suggested – we did 2016 up there, though it is much colder which is harder for the timekeepers. Talking of whom, I am very grateful to Rob again for his immaculate timing and presentation of results – he did every race last year and I didn’t expect such commitment again. It does make a difference to how well things go. Also thanks to Elen, Fred,  Ian, and John for supporting Rob. Anyway it meant that I got to run this one unexpectedly and so can give the excuse that I didn’t have my racing shoes……..or the race preparation…….or a warm-up…….and of course a ridiculous handicap!
